Sometimes I wonder why I can’t sleep that good. It happens often is a big shoot is on my plan for the next day, I ask myself “Is my light plan right, did I miss something, is there something to improve?”. As a child of the computerized generation, I was wondering if there is a software to simulate light setups. There are different ideas out there on the web, some use Blender to simulate light, others tried Cinema 4D. I’ve tried some of the provided project files, but … well … I am not a 3D-Guy, so I struggled with the UI of Blender and Cinama 4D. The I found set.a.alight 3D and some things changed. set.a.light 3D has a very clean UI, is easy to use and performs as expected. Here are some things you can set up:
- room size (so you can really set up YOUR studio)
- wall and floor colors
- a wide variety of lighting modifiers grids and gels
- studio flashes and speedlights
- different models with changeable clothings and poses (with one model animated)
- Utilities like backdrops, boxed, plants, a sofa with free dimensions
And last but not least, you can set up the Camera:
- Crop-factor
- focal length
- aperture
- orientation: portrait / landscape
As soon as you finished your setup, you can render the result – and this is pretty close to what it looks in “real” light.

If you show mood pictures to a model, they tend to compare themselves with the model on the photo. Most of the time you get messages like “I am not that skinny” or “where do we get that parachute from?” (don’t ask…). If you provide 3D-rendered images, everything is abstract and the model done not want (or subconsciously motivated) to copy exactly what they see. They will try to create their own interpretation, which is a good thing and leads to very relaxed shooting. Here are some sample setups, along with the controls to make them. Right now, I am planning our (Kamerakind) new studio and I’ve found out: Set.a.light is helpful as an architecture program as well. I’ve set up the room size and, I’ve found out that our studio is too small for a full body shot with my favorite lens (85mm). Well… I should have tried that before signing the contract, but at least I will not be disappointed if I use my camera the first time in the studio. Here is the new Studio-plan: set.a.alight 3D comes as two versions:
- basic version for $39.90
- Studio version for $139,90
